Paramount TV Studios secured three of the four top positions on Nielsen’s September 2026 original streaming series chart, led by the Prime Video action drama Reacher, its new spinoff Neagley, and the Paramount+ thriller Lioness. According to Variety, Reacher claimed the No. 1 spot among U.S. viewers aged two and older with 4.6 billion minutes viewed between September 1 and September 30, 2026. Neagley and Lioness tied for third place, each logging 3.3 billion viewing minutes across the month.
The only non-Paramount production to break into the top four was Season 4 of Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso, produced by Warner Bros. Television, which took second place with 3.6 billion minutes viewed. Together, the metrics underscore a strong autumn run for Paramount's television production arm across both its in-house streaming platform and third-party licensing partners.
Action Thrillers Dominate September's Top 10
The September rankings highlight a heavy viewer appetite for action and crime thrillers. Leading the pack by a full billion minutes over its nearest competitor, Reacher Season 4 adapted Lee Child’s novel Gone Tomorrow, starring Alan Ritchson in the title role. The flagship series used a hybrid rollout, beginning with a three-episode premiere in August and releasing weekly installments through September 16. Its companion series, Neagley, starring Maria Sten as Frances Neagley, dropped all eight episodes of its first season on September 16, accumulating its 3.3 billion minutes in just the final two weeks of the measurement window.
While Variety and Yahoo Entertainment report the measurement window as September 1 through September 30, a separate analysis from ScreenRant notes the combined 7.9 billion minutes for the Reacher franchise while referencing a September 1 through September 26 timeframe. Regardless of the window citation, the individual show totals reported across outlets remain identical, and secondary recaps vary only in whether they format the 3.3 billion-minute deadlock between Neagley and Lioness as a tie for third or list them sequentially as third and fourth.
Rounding out the top five was Netflix’s Monster: Lizzie Borden, which premiered on September 17 and generated 3.1 billion viewing minutes. The remainder of Nielsen’s top 10 original streaming series for September included Netflix’s The Gentlemen (2.8 billion minutes), SEAL Team across Paramount+ and Netflix (2.2 billion minutes), Netflix’s Beauty in Black (1.9 billion minutes), Netflix’s Outer Banks (1.7 billion minutes), and Apple TV+’s Silo (1.4 billion minutes).
Studio Production Versus Platform Distribution
While the chart represents a major victory for Paramount TV Studios, industry data clarifies an important distinction between studio production credits and streaming platform viewership. Although some secondary aggregators like Headtopics mistakenly framed the milestone as Paramount+ streaming three of the top four series, only Lioness actually streams on Paramount+.
Reacher and Neagley are co-produced by Paramount TV Studios and Amazon MGM Studios exclusively for Prime Video. Showrunner Nick Santora oversees Reacher and co-runs Neagley alongside Nicholas Wootton. Meanwhile, Lioness, which stars Zoe Saldaña and is executive produced by Taylor Sheridan, is a co-production between Paramount TV Studios and 101 Studios for Paramount+. Its third season released episodes weekly from August 2 through September 20.
In a separate metric measuring platform performance, Forbes reported via Skydance data that Lioness averaged 8.5 million viewers per week across its eight-episode third season, marking a 62% audience increase over Season 2. Additionally, Paramount TV Studios carried its momentum into broadcast and multiplatform rankings in early October. Its CBS series Marshals premiered Season 2 on October 4, ranking as the week’s No. 1 entertainment series across broadcast and streaming based on live+7 multiplatform data. According to Collider, both Marshals and the Justin Hartley-led CBS procedural Tracker—which recently began its fourth season—have also maintained spots inside the Paramount+ Top 10 chart.
What the Numbers Mean for Viewers and Future Seasons
For fans of the dominating thriller franchises, the viewership numbers have already translated into long-term renewals. According to ScreenRant, Prime Video has renewed Reacher through Season 6, with Season 5 slated to adapt Lee Child’s 20th franchise novel, Make Me. Season 4 earned a 92% critics' score and a 64% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, while Neagley scored 94% from critics and 82% from audiences, securing a Season 2 renewal for the spinoff.
On Paramount+, Lioness has not yet received an official Season 4 renewal or cancellation announcement. However, Taylor Sheridan’s broader television slate remains active on the service, with Marshals Season 2 and Tulsa King Season 4 currently airing, and upcoming seasons confirmed for Landman (Season 3), The Madison (Season 2), Mayor of Kingstown (Season 5), and Dutton Ranch (Season 2).
Does total viewing time measure unique viewers?
No. As noted in analysis by SnipDaily, Nielsen’s monthly chart tracks total minutes viewed rather than individual headcounts. The metric is influenced by episode runtimes, repeat viewing, and the total volume of episodes available—giving multi-season series like Reacher or full-season binge drops like Neagley distinct structural pathways to accumulate high minute totals.
Why is Neagley’s September total notable?
Unlike series that accumulated viewership across the entire 30-day September window, Neagley premiered its eight-episode first season on September 16. Matching the 3.3 billion minutes of Lioness in just half a month demonstrated immediate audience crossover from the parent series.
