Troian Bellisario, best known for her seven-season run on Pretty Little Liars, is officially joining the cast of ABC's police procedural drama The Rookie for its upcoming ninth season. Series creator and showrunner Alexi Hawley announced the recurring casting decision on October 11 during a panel at New York Comic Con, ahead of the Season 9 premiere scheduled for January 6, 2027, at 9 p.m. ET on ABC. Bellisario will step into the Mid-Wilshire Division of the Los Angeles Police Department as the newest recruit assigned to train under veteran Officer John Nolan, played by series lead Nathan Fillion.

The casting adds a familiar television presence to the established ensemble, which includes Fillion, Melissa O'Neil, and Eric Winter. As reported by Yahoo Entertainment, Hawley confirmed Bellisario's involvement after her brief appearance in a promotional sizzle reel shown to attendees at the New York convention. Alongside Bellisario, the ninth installment will also feature The West Wing and Psych alum Dulé Hill in a recurring guest-starring capacity throughout the season.

Who Is Stephanie "Stevie" Monroe?

In Season 9, the 40-year-old actress will portray Stephanie "Stevie" Monroe, a woman in her thirties who decides to reinvent her life by enrolling in the police academy. Rather than entering the force straight out of college, Monroe arrives at the LAPD with significant life experience and adult responsibilities already behind her.

"You might have seen in the sizzle reel that Troian Bellisario is coming to join us," Hawley stated during the New York Comic Con panel, in remarks shared on Entertainment Weekly's Instagram account and cited by Oduu. "She will play Nolan's new rookie. So, a single mom of two, who's trying to restart her life after a painful divorce. And you know, it's a rookie that we've never had before on the show, somebody who's not starting out from scratch. So, we're super excited about her."

While Hawley described Monroe as a completely new type of character for the long-running drama, Fillion was quick to point out the clear parallels to his own character's origin story during the panel, sarcastically noting her status as someone entering law enforcement midway through her life.

A Return to the Show's Original Premise

Since premiering in 2018, The Rookie has evolved considerably from its pilot episode. Created by Hawley—who previously collaborated with Fillion on the ABC crime series Castle—the procedural originally focused on John Nolan's fish-out-of-water experience as the oldest rookie in the LAPD. At the start of the series, Nolan was freshly divorced with a college-aged son when he survived a bank robbery, shut down his Pennsylvania contracting business, and relocated to California to join the police force.

Over its eight-season run, Nolan has climbed the departmental ranks to become a designated training officer, shifting the show's focus toward a broader ensemble format. While the series has regularly introduced fresh recruits to keep its title relevant, those incoming officers have predominantly been younger, single, and child-free.

According to an analysis by Collider, the introduction of Stevie Monroe signals a deliberate return to the show's foundational themes of second chances and mid-life career shifts. Prior to Bellisario's casting, the only other older recruit introduced on the program was Larry Macer, played by Greg Grunberg, a character played largely for comedic relief who washed out on his first day after accidentally discharging his firearm indoors. Pairing Monroe directly with Nolan—currently the only active training officer within the core cast—positions the upcoming season to directly revisit the personal and professional hurdles that defined the series in its earliest years.

From the Director's Chair to the Patrol Car

Although Season 9 marks Bellisario's first on-screen appearance in the franchise, she is already familiar with the cast, crew, and production workflow of the ABC procedural. Before signing on to play Officer Monroe, she stepped behind the camera during the show's eighth season to direct the episode titled "The Thinker," which aired in late March 2026.

For television audiences, the role represents a prominent return to network drama for Bellisario, who spent seven seasons starring as Spencer Hastings on the hit mystery series Pretty Little Liars. Following the announcement at New York Comic Con, viewers took to social media to praise the transition from director to recurring cast member.

"Can't wait to see Troian back on screen!!!" one viewer wrote following the panel reveal, while another fan on social media called the move "some killer casting" and expressed optimism for the upcoming storyline.

What Viewers Can Expect in 2027

With production gearing up for its midseason return, the addition of both Bellisario and Dulé Hill injects fresh dynamics into the Mid-Wilshire precinct. Viewers will see how Nolan adapts his training methods for a recruit who shares much of his own life experience, contrasting sharply with his previous trainees. The Rookie Season 9 is set to debut on Wednesday, January 6, 2027, at 9 p.m. ET on ABC.
