Grammy-winning pop star Olivia Rodrigo has officially entered the seasonal music market with the release of her first-ever holiday single, "Take Me Home (4 Christmas)." The track premiered alongside a celebrity-filled music video on Thursday, November 5, at 5 p.m. PT (8 p.m. ET), according to Billboard. Arriving amid the singer's ongoing North American arena tour, the festive release marks a new catalog milestone following a high-profile year of chart-topping music and philanthropic events.
The 23-year-old artist first announced the surprise project on Monday, November 2, via Instagram, sharing cover art that featured her sitting on the floor wearing a red Santa hat and matching lipstick. In her social media announcement, Rodrigo wrote, "my first Christmas song 'take me home (4 christmas)' is out this Thursday at 5 pm pt/ 8 pm ET!! you can preorder it now. im so excited!!!"
Star-Studded Visuals and Creative Team
To bring her debut holiday effort to life, Rodrigo reunited with her core studio collaborators. As reported by Variety, "Take Me Home (4 Christmas)" was co-written by Rodrigo alongside frequent songwriting partners Dan Nigro and Amy Allen, with Nigro handling production duties.
Allen previously co-wrote five tracks on Rodrigo's latest studio album, while Nigro has served as the primary producer across Rodrigo's discography.
The accompanying music video, which debuted simultaneously with the audio track on Thursday evening, leans heavily into seasonal nostalgia and humor. According to Yahoo Entertainment, the visual features Rodrigo celebrating among a family dressed in bright Christmas sweaters in front of a crackling fireplace. The clip includes guest appearances by Sex and the City actress Cynthia Nixon and Saturday Night Live cast member Ben Marshall. During the video, the group plays a festive round of the guessing game "Heads Up!" in which every participant unknowingly has the name "Olivia Rodrigo" taped to their forehead.
Physical Editions, Retail Rollout, and B-Side Reports
Beyond digital streaming platforms, Rodrigo's team organized a multi-format physical rollout for collectors. Two physical formats—a 7-inch vinyl single and a cassette tape—were made available for online pre-order through Rodrigo's official webstore and Target's website earlier in the week.
According to Clash Magazine, the physical 7-inch vinyl edition hits shelves in North American retail stores, including Target locations, starting Friday, November 6, with UK and European retail outlets scheduled to follow.
The global rollout has prompted slight variations in how the release date and tracklist are described across different regions. While U.S. trade publications like Billboard and Variety note the track dropped on Thursday evening, November 5, in American time zones, international outlets such as BBC Newsround and the UK's Official Charts list the release date as Friday, November 6, reflecting the time-zone transition across the Atlantic. Additionally, BBC Newsround reports that the release includes a second holiday track titled "Miss This Christmas" serving as a B-side to the main single, though U.S. entertainment outlets have focused exclusively on "Take Me Home (4 Christmas)" without detailing a secondary song.
Capping Off a Record-Breaking Year
The holiday single caps off a busy calendar year for the former Disney star. In June, Rodrigo released her third studio album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love (also referenced in some industry reports as You Look Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love).
The record topped the charts in 17 countries, spent three total weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, and produced the Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 single "Drop Dead," which also reached No. 1 in the UK in April. According to Vulture, the album's performance made Rodrigo the first artist in history to have every track from her first three studio albums enter Billboard's Top 40.
In August, Rodrigo launched the inaugural Daisy Chain Fields festival, featuring an all-female lineup that raised over $20 million for nonprofit organizations supporting women's rights and charities. She followed the festival by kicking off her Unraveled arena tour in September. On October 15, she teamed up with fellow pop artist Chappell Roan for a surprise remix of the album track "Expectations," accompanied by a music video featuring Talking Heads frontman David Byrne as a game-show host.
That collaboration climbed to No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and currently sits at No. 4 on the UK charts.
What It Means for the Holiday Music Landscape
By releasing "Take Me Home (4 Christmas)" during the first week of November, Rodrigo joins an increasingly competitive seasonal music market. Historically dominated by Mariah Carey's perennial hit "All I Want for Christmas Is You," the modern holiday pop space has recently seen strong showings from contemporary peers like Sabrina Carpenter, who released her fruitcake EP in 2023 and a Netflix holiday variety special in 2024, as well as Kylie Minogue, who claimed last year's UK Christmas No. 1 spot with "XMAS." Rodrigo's track also arrives during a crowded week for festive releases, landing just hours ahead of Alanis Morissette's holiday album Good Weather for Immaculate Conception and Sufjan Stevens' compilation Worst Christmas Ever, and following a recent holiday EP from Hilary Duff.
For concertgoers, the timing of the release offers the prospect of hearing the new seasonal track performed live.
The North American leg of Rodrigo's Unraveled Tour continues across the United States and Canada through December 20, before pausing for a brief winter break and resuming in January on a global run scheduled through May 2027. In between her December tour dates, Rodrigo will also be honored in Los Angeles at Variety's 10th annual Hitmakers event, where she is slated to receive the Songwriter of the Year Award alongside fellow honorees Sienna Spiro and Katseye.
